In other news...

The potential next President of Mexico and current second most important government official, 37-year-old Interior Minister and point man in the drug wars, Juan Camilo Mouriño Terrazo, died as his LearJet crashed into bumper to bumper traffic on the most important street of Mexico City. The AP has the story here.

The Lear jet, carrying three crew members, Mr. Mouriño and four of his aides, came down on busy Reforma Avenue about 6:45 p.m., scattering wreckage over a vast area.

“It fell on top of all the traffic, which you know is completely stopped,” said Arturo Sánchez Rios, a food vendor. “I saw 10 to 15 cars explode in a manner of seconds.”

Giant flames soared into the night sky but there were no immediate reports of deaths on the ground. Officials said nearly 2,000 people were evacuated from area office buildings.

I wrote about him last January here.

I suppose given the drug war in Mexico and his role in fighting it there must be questions of whether it was an accident or murder.

Oh yeah, nothing to see folks, just move along.

All you have to do is read the article, and it lays it right out, the parts about heading the government's security apparatus, and being point man in the drug war.

Heck, you don't even have to understand that, in most states, the minister of the interior is NOTHING like the US Secretary of the Interior.

Why am I reminded of Alexander Ivanovich Lebed, and Ron Brown?

Then again, when I hear "fell" I think "pushed."

"The crash appeared to have been an accident and there were no signs of foul play."

Right. I believe that. For sure.

Incidentally their was an article in the Observer (UK) this Sunday about Mexico's drug war and the horrific murder rate in Tijuana. Given the scale of the conflict I'm amazed it hasn't been more widely discussed in the media or in the recent election. I'd have thought a small war on the US border would stir some interest.

90% probability it's a CIA hit, rather than some intra-national dispute between drug lords.

The CIA loves to do plane crashes, while it's probably above the IQ threshold of some mere drug lord (air crash needs some expertise, security access, and usually sophisticated technical equipment to engineer.) A drug lord would simply find a way to shoot/blow him up, methinks.
